Miami Art Galleries
Many artists and designers make their homes in Miami because of its great climate and rich cultural diversity, making it a city full of life, excitement and inspiration. This is a place with a rich history, and a good knowledge of this can be gained by visiting Miami's many museums and art galleries.
The Miami Dade Cultural Center houses several arts venues: The Miami Art Museum(
www.miamiartmuseum.org) features art form 1945 to the present, with a fantastic permanent collection as well as various touring exhibitions. The Historical Museum of Southern Florida (
www.historical-museum.org)has many exhibits detailing the culture of Florida, including a railroad exhibit and an old Miami Streetcar. The museum also has an excellent display on prehistoric Miami. For more information on Florida's history, try visiting the Main Public Library, also in the Cultural Center. Here you can see rare books and documents detailing the state's history, as well as an art exhibit located in the second floor lobby.
Miami Beach is home to the wonderful Bass Museum of Art (
www.bassmuseum.org), which contains many European works, most notably those of famous turn-of-the-century French painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. For more modern works, visit the Wolfsonian-Florida International University (
www.wolfsonian.fiu.edu). The Village of Coconut grove is the best place to experience the best of Miami's local art and design. This area is home to over 300 galleries, perfect for browsing through to find that fantastic piece of art to take home and hang on your wall.
